Edgewood Defense sets the tone for the route of South Spencer by Rachael Carey

The Edgewood Mustangs put together another dominant performance Friday night, defeating the South Spencer Rebels by a score of 49-12. The Mustangs controlled the game on both sides of the ball, outgaining the Rebels 279-222 in total yardage. Edgewood’s balanced attack featured 94 rushing yards and 187 passing yards, while the defense came up big with two touchdowns of its own. Junior quarterback Braylon Linerode (#18) led the way through the air, completing 14 of 25 passes for 179 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. Junior running back Braxton Carpenter (#11) was once again a force on the ground, carrying the ball 18 times for 118 yards and two touchdowns, including a 68-yard score. Senior receiver Reece Roberts (#4) hauled in 2 receptions for 45 yards, while senior Gunnar Perry (#10) added 3 catches for 31 yards and a touchdown. Junior Dylan Wickens (#88) and sophomore Eli Lirot (#23) also contributed with touchdown receptions to give the Mustangs multiple scoring threats. On defense, the Mustangs showcased their toughness and ability to make game-changing plays. Junior Lincoln Getts (#53) led the way with 7 tackles and a sack, while Sophomore Rowen Heitink (#25) and senior Gunnar Perry (#10) also recorded 7 tackles apiece. Heitink added a strip sack that Carter Hayden recovered in the end zone for one of the defensive scores. He also recovered another fumble caused by Lincoln Getts that led to an easy score. The other Defensive score came from a great hit by Toby Connors that jarred the ball loose. It was scooped up by Reece Roberts, who returned it for a touchdown. With the 49-12 victory, the Mustangs improve to 2-0 and carry strong momentum into next week’s matchup. Edgewood will return home Friday to host South Putnam High School (2-0), with kickoff set for 7:00 p.m. at Edgewood High School. The Mustangs will look to stay unbeaten and continue their strong start to the season in front of their home crowd.
